Diamond certificates are more accurately known as Diamond Grading Reports. These documents are commonly provided with the purchase of a significant stone of over 25 points or more. These reports are prepared by independent, certified gemmologists from laboratories around the world and can help calculate the specific characteristics of your diamonds (colour, cut, clarity and carat weight, for example).
It is important for all consumers to be aware that a lot of diamond grading is and only ever will be an opinion, be it someone with 20 years experience or the average of three people's opinions. As happens plenty of times over, a diamond can be submitted back to a lab where previously it has received an E - VS2, and return this time with an F SI1. Some insurance may require a grading report if you are planning to insure the diamond. But most will only need a valuation.
